This is part four in a series of charges stemming from Aaron Baart’s chapel service from March of 2015 regarding sexuality. This is the fourth charge:
Baart said homosexuals are born that way, no fault, no culpability and that the ideal does not include the open homosexual lifestyle.
Romans 1 tells us that because they suppressed the truth in unrighteousness, God gave them over to unnatural, debased homosexual desires. But for the sake of argument, lets concede they were born that way.
Belgic Confession Article 15 explains it does not matter if people are born that way:
Article 15: Of Original Sin—
“We believe that, through the disobedience of Adam, original sin is extended to all mankind; which is a corruption of the whole nature, and a hereditary disease, wherewith infants themselves are infected even in their mother’s womb, and which produces in man all sorts of sin, being in him as a root thereof; and therefore is so vile and abominable in the sight of God, that it is sufficient to condemn all mankind. Wherefore we reject the error of the Pelagians, who assert that sin proceeds only from imitation.”
When the Belgic Confession says ‘hereditary disease’ it means we are born that way — a genetic/spiritual disease. We are culpable and condemned even for sins we were born with, even for our ‘natural’ inclinations and desires. Even if we did not willfully choose it.
Genesis 8:21 says “even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood.”
We must repent and turn from sin to be saved. We are powerless without the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. Being ‘born again’ means that we will fight against sin in our lives, whether they are actions, thoughts or desires (Heidelberg Catechism, 109 and 113).
If the Holy Spirit isn’t convicting a person of sin, then this shows they are not regenerate even though they may claim to be.
109. Q — Does God in this commandment forbid nothing more than adultery and similar shameful sins?
A — Since we, body and soul, are temples of the Holy Spirit, it is God’s will that we keep ourselves pure and holy. Therefore He forbids all unchaste acts, gestures, words, thoughts, desires, and whatever may entice us to unchastity.
Baart may say that the CRC 1973 position statement supports this position of no culpability. If you actually read this Freudian leaning document, you will find that they treated homosexuality like kleptomania and other mental disorders.
Shame and repentance were assumed in this document if they were mentally cognizant of their disorder.
Basically, the 1973 report said — “not guilty by reason of insanity” type of an appeal. This is not what Baart is saying.
It is true that the modern distortion in the RCA and CRC is to apply this “no culpability” concept to unrepentant, open and proud homosexuals, where humanistic self-actualization trumps the doctrine of original sin.
Although the 1973 document was unsound, this current heretical application is clearly false teaching.
